Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24, 72 in Long Beach, California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of the arts by her aunt Denise when she was a girl. She worked as a night nurse to allow her mother the time she needed throughout the day to indulge in the passion of art, literature, and theater. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay recognized that art is an effective tool for promoting the cause of activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother, who was a social sassy and encouraged DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and was raised. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the Civil Rights movement's historic march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Selma to later direct a documentary about the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for the field of broadcast journalism while a student. She began her career as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to take a look at the junk of a jury member's home. The tasks that she had to accomplish left her unsatisfied and, following her decision to not pursue the field of journalism, she was able to move to the field of public relations. DuVernay got a job right after college as a young publicist for a studio. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999.
